Cell Genesys Sinks To All-Time Low After Gvax Trial Ends Due To Patient Deaths

August 28, 2008 (FinancialWire) Shares of Cell Genesys Inc. (NASDAQ: CEGE) plunged to an all-time low after the company halted a clinical trial of its prostate cancer vaccine GVAX because of patient deaths. Shares of Dendreon Corp. (NASDAQ: DNDN), which is developing its own prostate cancer vaccine called Provenge, also declined. The company stopped VITAL-2, one of two late-stage tests of GVAX, because patients who received GVAX were dying more often than those who received only a standard treatment. The company's stock plunged $2.02, or 72 percent, to 79 cents per share, and fell as far as 69 cents per share, less than half its previous all-time low of $1.55, which was set in January. GVAX is the company's lead product candidate and earlier clinical trials, as well as the ongoing VITAL-1 tests, include patients who are healthier than those in VITAL-2, and in those studies. GVAX uses whole cells and targets many proteins within tumors, while Provenge targets only a single protein.
