308 students transfer schools
Atlanta Public Schools officials said 308 students have switched to higher-performing schools as allowed under the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The law requires schools to reach certain goals on specific tests and sanctions schools that fail to reach these benchmarks for at least two years in a row. One penalty requires failing schools to let students transfer to higher-performing campuses.
DEKALB COUNTY
Health insurance gets another look
DeKalb County delayed again picking a company to provide health insurance. The county will spend about $78 million for employee health benefits this year with a projected rise to $84 million next year. County commissioners earlier this week questioned a consultant's recommendation of a Cigna plan, saying a similar offering from Blue Cross Blue Shield didn't get a fair evaluation. Both plans are expected to make their case to a commission committee.
FULTON COUNTY
College Park gets grant for police
The College Park Police Department will receive a $13,104 federal grant to aid in local law enforcement. The department will buy a computer program to investigate burglaries, thefts of property and identity thefts and two motor scooters for community events that would limit use of a full-size vehicle.
GWINNETT COUNTY
No foul play seen in death of woman
Gwinnett County authorities said Wednesday there is no evidence of foul play in the death of a 22-year-old woman who was struck by a train Aug. 11. The victim has been identified as Mubina Beato. She lived near where her body was found on the railroad tracks close to Gloster Road and Oak Road in Lawrenceville.
