COPD Management at Home

Based on the 1988 American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Consensus Guidelines for treatment of COPD, this seminar covers the three broad goals as brought forward by the ACCP in detail — providing support and explanation for how these goals can be pursued in patient care. The step approach and appropriate administration of medication(s), the consequences of hypoxemia, the benefits of LTOT and the essential elements of any pulmonary rehabilitation program are included in this introduction to COPD disease state management in the home.

Advances in Home Oxygen

Three types of home oxygen systems available to patients today — liquid, gas, and concentrators — will be discussed in depth. A comprehensive overview of equipment and patient options currently available will be presented to assist the clinician in evaluating the benefits and limitations of each oxygen delivery system. Topics will include: the decision process in determining the correct system, evaluating the patient’s needs in relation to system options and limitations, portability considerations and coverage issues.

Sleep Disordered Breathing: Role of CPAP and Bi-Level Devices

This continuing education seminar reviews common types of sleep disordered breathing, the impact of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hypoventilation syndrome on quality sleep and available treatment for these common disorders. The participant will gain increased knowledge on the benefits of CPAP, Medicare guidelines, decision process for using bi-level pressure therapy as an option for failed CPAP, purpose of bi-level therapy in treating hypoventilation syndrome, common problems experienced by patients while using therapy with interventional solution, and the critical role of compliance management.

Alpha-1

The pathophysiology of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin deficiency, including the impact of the specific genetic phenotypes is the topic of this seminar. It will provide an overview of 3 primary systems affected by this disease, focusing on the clinical manifestation of lung involvement. The continuum from diagnosis through treatment will be discussed. Treatment standards of care, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, will be detailed — including the option of lung transplant for some patients.
